Review of Mandarin Oriental Barcelona

Jason Eckhoff Jason Eckhoff Mar 10, 2023

Occupying the storied former Banco Hispano-Americano building, the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona commands a prime position along the prestigious Passeig de Gràcia. The property’s discreet 1955 façade, adorned with stately bas reliefs and an imposing entryway, hints at the exclusivity found within. Upon arrival, guests are whisked up an architectural catwalk suspended over a luminous atrium, crowned by a glass ceiling that floods the space with natural light and reveals the hotel’s harmonious blend of classic and contemporary design.

Renowned designer Patricia Urquiola has curated all 120 sophisticated rooms and suites, infusing each with an understated elegance, tactile finishes, and soothing neutral tones. Many accommodations feature private balconies or terraces, with the signature Barcelona Suite offering an expansive furnished terrace overlooking the city’s vibrant skyline, while the palatial Penthouse Suite occupies the entire top floor for the ultimate in privacy and panoramic views.

Gastronomy is a highlight, with four distinct venues: the airy Blanc Restaurant and Lounge offering refined all-day dining; the acclaimed Moments Restaurant, helmed by the legendary chef Carme Ruscalleda and retaining two Michelin stars for its innovative Catalan cuisine; the atmospheric Banker’s Bar, celebrated for its inventive mixology; and Terrat, a rooftop oasis for open-air dining beside the outdoor pool. The lush Mimosa Garden, a tranquil 660-square-metre sanctuary crafted by Bet Figueras and Patricia Urquiola, serves as a peaceful retreat for light refreshments amidst Mediterranean botanicals.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona is a destination in itself, featuring eight serene Asian-inspired treatment rooms, including two designed for couples, and a comprehensive menu of holistic therapies. Wellness amenities include a sleek 12-metre indoor lap pool, state-of-the-art fitness centre, rooftop outdoor pool with city views, the exclusive HairSpa by Miriam Quevedo, and a dedicated Beauty Room by Vanitas Espai. During our recent stay, we found the service to be consistently attentive and personalized, cementing Mandarin Oriental Barcelona’s status among Europe’s leading urban luxury hotels.
